We can’t deny that most Filipinos working abroad have improved their living status. They have big houses, luxurious cars, and other material things. They can afford expensive vacation trips. They can provide expensive education for their children. Behind their lavish living however they have experienced lots of hardships and sacrifices that people in the community are not aware of. With that, I could say they also deserve to enjoy what they’ve acquired abroad. Despite greener pastures abroad, there are still valid reasons Filipinos should stay in the country.

1. Brain Drain. A lot of talented and brilliant Filipinos have left the country and many are still leaving. Their venture paid off because they have been recognized of their achievements abroad. With what has happened in the country nowadays, we need to keep more people with good brains. A good brain is a brain with a good heart. Filipinos are highly demanded abroad because of being compassionate with other people and being passionate about their work. The country needs more of these kinds of people to stay these days.

2. Opportunities. There are more and better opportunities in the foreign land than in the country. An opportunity is a gateway to excellence. We, Filipinos given with wide array of opportunities really tend to excel. Opportunities do not simply have to do with material things. There are also opportunities of exposure to life changing experiences abroad. Philippines on the other hand never ran out of opportunities. Economic problems which the country never ran out of for example are opportunities. It is the right time to be more innovative and be more creative in our ventures. For businessmen, facing more problems in the economy means having more opportunities to earn money. I believe that’s the attitude each of us should practice. And that’s one way to help the country.

3. Freedom. The number one freedom we enjoy in the Philippines is the freedom of expression. Anyone can write a song, vandalize on walls, and express their feelings freely. Anyone can impersonate and even make fun of the government officials, and everyone will simply laugh about it and move on. It’s not good sometimes because we tend to abuse it also. In some other countries, people are not allowed to do that to their leaders. On the good side of it, I could say there is no better place to live but home.

    He is correct, you could be a “millionaire” of pesos in the Philippines with just 24,000 USD but who the fuck cares? No one cares if you’re a millionaire or not. THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS is the buying power of your money. The level of prices in each respective country determines the buying power of each unit of currency, and your buying power and quantity of money determines your level of prosperity. In the year 2009 Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation easily made people trillionaires (they had a trillion dollar banknote), but that doesn’t mean shit, since they couldn’t buy shit with it.

    ….And then this author gets into 3 different ‘reasons’ to stay home, which are really no reasons at all.

    1. Brain Drain. THIS IS A NOT REASON TO STAY. “A good brain is a brain with a good heart. Filipinos are highly demanded abroad because of being compassionate with other people and being passionate about their work.” REALLY? REALLY? REALLY? Since when does your definition of a “good brain” matter? Who give’s a flying fuck? If you have a good brain you are smart, intelligent and effective. If filipinos are in high demand, then they should demand higher wages, and higher pay, and they will seek a better life in countries where they can receive wages that they deserve. For example, if you were the #1 doctor in the world, why would you work in the Philippines and get paid shitty wages there when in other countries they easily pay you more? The fact that there’s a brain drain DOESN’T MATTER. The PI needs to incentivize people to stay.

    2. Opportunities. There are opportunities in the Philippines, sure. But there are BETTER opportunities abroad. To say that the opportunities in the PI are much more life-changing and better than other countries is elitist. I’m sorry, but people leave the PI for good reason, and the PI govt has yet to provide the correct incentives for people to return or stay. There are no opportunities in the Philippines. At least, not ones that people can easily grab hold of.

    3. Freedom. You know, in America, we can write a poem, write a song, draw on our own walls, and do whatever we want within our law system too. In the Philippines you can do whatever you want within your own law system as well. I don’t think Filipinos are emigrating to areas where there is crippling political strife and lack of freedoms.

    In sum, your blog here represents why the PI has struggled with the brain drain and the mass emigration of Filipino talent. You are not giving any REAL concrete reasons to stay or return other than “it is home.” But “home” for many is a fluid concept, and HUMAN BEINGS can make “home” whatever they so choose, whether it is a loved one or a piece of land, even if it is abroad.
    Rethink EVERYTHING and try again. Figure out a way to make the Philippines more appealing for talent.

Look who’s running some of our gov’t offices, Movie Actors/Actresses, Singers, Boxers..etc. or who ever has made a name for themselves, let alone, their relatives. What the hell do they know. Sometimes, I blame the “Common Tao” for voting these kind of people into office. It’s been a domino effect ever. No wonder our gov’t is going nowhere , but down…..

If you met and accident or got sick and has stopped you from working – it could be a valid reason that your company will send you home.

    For that reason I attended to some free training and seminars in my location and develop my other talents and skills – now I learned that aside from job there are other opportunities that an OFW will benefit – now I know how money will work for you. Not just all the time you will work for money. Kahit wala sa Pinas one can still develop his other talents and skills kung gugustuhin.

    The truth is OFWs contribute much for the Philippines’prosperity – just imagine between 15 to 16 billion dollars yearly remittances that the Philippines received from the 11 million Filipino diaspora – that’s something.

So, going abroad will not make us less Filipinos. (2) We are all self rational interested people. Meaning we want to work more if we are well compensated (it may be material, spiritual or whatever). It’s an economic principle not similar to selfishness. (3) Besides, working abroad will benefit the economy of our country from our remittances.
